The Testament of Ann Lee (2025) - A Stunning Biopic with Amanda Seyfried (2026)

The release of “The Testament of Ann Lee” on Hulu has sparked a lot of interest, and for good reason. This biopic, directed by Mona Fastvold, takes us on a journey through the life of Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shaker religious movement, and it’s a captivating watch. As someone who identifies as non-religious, I was initially drawn to the film for its historical setting and the promise of an immersive experience. And let me tell you, it delivered!

What makes this film particularly fascinating is its portrayal of Ann Lee’s journey from a poverty-stricken childhood in Manchester to her role as a religious leader in upstate New York. The story is beautifully told, and I found myself deeply moved by Ann’s character and her unique path. One thing that immediately stands out is the film’s use of Shaker songs and dance to depict their worship. It’s a powerful way to showcase the ecstasy and passion that fueled this religious movement.

The costumes, designed by Malgorzata Karpiuk, are a key element in bringing this story to life. Karpiuk had a challenging task, especially with the Shaker’s distinctive dancing, but she rose to the occasion. The attention to detail is remarkable, and the costumes evolve as Ann Lee’s character does. From the simple white print dress of her early years to the more modest and covered-up looks as she embraces celibacy, the costumes tell a story of their own.

One detail that I found especially interesting is the way Ann Lee’s costumes change as she has her revelations in prison. Karpiuk notes how Ann wanted to be less attractive, and this is reflected in the way her chest is covered and her hair is hidden under a larger bonnet. It’s a subtle yet powerful visual representation of her spiritual journey.

As the Shaker colony establishes itself, the characters adopt a more standardized religious dress. Karpiuk took creative license here, and the result is a unique vision of the Shaker look. The attention to color palette, with shades of heaven, is a beautiful touch.

The film also features a few upper-class characters, whose costumes offer a contrast to the Shaker’s simplicity. The American landlady and the male characters with their stylish wigs provide an interesting dynamic.

In my opinion, “The Testament of Ann Lee” is a must-watch for anyone interested in strong historical female characters. It’s a film that will leave you thinking long after the credits roll. Have you seen it? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this captivating biopic!
